The Rec Center

Supporting the Youth of our Community

From Founder, Audre King

When I grew up in the neighborhood next to the Rec Center, the building was abandoned, and the street corners in front of it were used as hang outs where people drank, drugs were exchanged, used, and sold, and the area wasn’t known for anything positive (to my generation).

Little did we know the rich history of education, and that this school once served as a pillar to a thriving community self-sufficient within itself throughout times of segregation.

Prominent people from Page County not only attended this school, but went off to accomplish great things worldwide.

For example:

  • Arthur Dougans, the first soldier from Page County killed in combat during the Vietnam War, lived in the area in front of the Rec Center.
  • Roscoe Frye who played professional baseball in the Negro League and many more.

In 2017, God gave me a vision to create the Rec Center. My wife and I moved back to the area for that purpose.

Finding the owners, and purchasing the property, we began building an area as a safe haven for the youth of our county.  We wanted create a place which would stop the stigma of “there’s nothing to do,” as well as be a safe place for youth to escape various situations they may be experiencing at home, as well as having a place to just be a kid.

While building this new facility, we also wanted to ensure we preserved the rich past, while creating a new future.

We have come a long way within these few  years. Please take a look around our new website to learn what has been going on and what is planned for the future.  We are so thankful for those who have supported our vision.
